Quilling Qompany
[ 2016 ]
Quilling Qompany was created by me. Quilling is a type of ornamental craftwork involving the shaping of paper, fabric, or glass into delicate pleats of folds. I designed the branding and the projects shown on this page.
This type of work letโs you in on a side of me that is VERY micro. I love tedious-intricate activities. Some people think I am a little crazy, and I am ok with that.
How It Started
In 2012 I needed inspiration for my college senior project. In my research I found Yulia Brodskaya, an amazing quiller from Russia. I was fascinated by the technique, so for my senior project I combined both quilling and design. I focused on the marriage of color and type for the event ATYPI in India, and honestly the rest is history! To this day, I am still quilling.
For the logo I wanted to convey the essence of quilling. By taking a popular shape done in quilling called Teardrop and vectorizing it and arranging it one next to the other you create a flower, which is what I am trying to show here.
I tried only using four colors like any design text book tells you to stick to but it wasnโt working. I used purple because it is a color that signifies creativity, imagination, and magic. I let my emotions navigate my color decision.
I wanted 3 different typefaces. 1 to match the condensed nature of quilling, 2 as a body copy, and the third a stamping font that comes in a kit. I use the stamping kit to add an additional handmade feel to each delicate quilling piece.
